The bright lights of the restaurant seemed to mock Ethan. He watched, from across the street, the bustling crowd clamoring to taste, "Madame Evangeline’s Secret Spice Blend." It was his spice blend, a family heirloom, passed down through generations. He’d foolishly trusted a business associate.

He stood in the cold, the wind cutting through his thin coat. He felt hollow, as if a vital organ had been removed. His movements were slow, almost robotic. He wanted to go home, to hide.
